My view on the plus and minus points of this scene hasn’t changed (from my old post):
– points:
The struggle between her and the attacker is much too short. The camera work is too fast and too shaky. We don’t see very much of her….
Many “mistakes”: Her tanks emptied so fast…. if she had more than a few % of her air left…that’s a mistake. It should take much longer until she is out.
She doesn’t fight back and her only action is to use the octopus.
And why is her dive buddy suddenly so far away from her? He was pretty close as he was cutting these cables.
Additional – points:
Why does she drown that fast? I often laugh at some scuba fetish videos where it takes up to 5 or more minutes for someone to drown which is just hilarious. But ok, I guess some folks wanna see it so long. Here it is quite the opposite: He cuts her air hose and she drowns in a matter of a few seconds. Equally weird. Especially as she uses her 2nd regulator and should get air from it as long the tank still has air in it.
Her male buddy behaves really completely insanely. He manages to disarm the attacker, who closes his air valve. But what does the guy do? Trying to reach it, and fails to do so. Ok, yeah, it’s not so easy to reach it with shorter arms. But…..why doesn’t he get out of his BCD-vest? Then he could easily reach the valve and turn his air back on! Instead, he dives to his now-dead girlfriend. He realizes that she is dead and that her air hose is cut. But he tries to get air from his tank! WHY? How is there supposed to be air left in there as the air hose is sliced and no more air escapes the cut hose? Completely moronic move. He still doesn’t think of turning his air back on and ascends rapidly, nearly dying in the process.
+ points:
First of all, this is the ONLY scene I know (in a movie or TV series) where a female diver is attacked…her air hose gets cut…AND she actually drowns afterward. In every other scene with an air hose cut…the female diver always survive. This aspect makes it unique! GREAT! A real big + point! (*EDIT* Now in 2021 it’s one of two scenes I know of that kind)
After she drowns we get to see a lot of scenes of her dead body. That is very rare too.
I guess many will love all these “death stare” scenes. And let’s be honest: I do ….like them….somehow. (But my main interest is to see the struggle before the drowning)
Additional + points:
The scuba fight with the two men is actually not bad. I wish he would have struggled with her like that. He manages to disarm the attacker and injures him.

Later on, her fires an emergency rocket and gets saved by the Barracuda crew. But some minutes later he gets shot by the killer….

But as I mentioned there is another scuba scene, check it out:
First of all, I love the end result! The evil scuba killer who drowned one frogwoman gets now (seemingly) drowned by another female diver (from the Barracuda police crew).
A really great, fitting result! 🙂
–
But…..
….what has happened down there?????? It isn’t shown and it isn’t explained at all. She doesn’t speak about it with the other crew members, no one asks her.
That way we totally have to use our imagination.
Has she somehow turned his air off? Has she stabbed him with a knife that was never shown? Was there a struggle between the two? Why didn’t both dive to the surface to find out what was going on there?
Well, all questions we never get an answer for….. 🙁
I really like to see her in closeups in her full face mask! Would have loved to see them fight against each other! With him trying to drown another frogwoman….but this frogwoman would be far better skilled than his last victim with her police scuba training (it was mentioned in the movie).
–
I guess in the end they may have been run out of money (or time) and just didn’t film some more scenes underwater.
A real shame, but it is cool to have another scuba scene in this movie….
A nice guy on a forum recommended me a certain video that was reviewing a James Bond documentary from 1965.
So, if you read 1965 you already may think of Thunderball as that was its release year. 😉
Well, the documentary actually deals with the first 4 Bond movies…incl. Thunderball.
In the documentary, you get some really nice scenes with the three major Bond girls of Thunderball.
As you (should) know there is only one scuba scene with Domino (Claudine Auger) in the movie.
In this documentary, there are some promo shots of the girls in bathing suits, bikini, and even wetsuits!
Let’s start with the most interesting part of the documentary you can find in the video below.
Preview:
Domino in her famous bathing suit
Oh my…. that lucky Bastard!
Scuba tank and speargun?!
Wetsuit and speargun?!

And here is the video:
–
Well, with that kind of narration …you wouldn’t get away with it today 😉
But I like the voice, very fitting.
Sadly that was everything to find in this documentary related to the Bond girls in Thunderball. But it is very interesting material after all! 🙂
It’s great to see the women on the set in such outfits. Seeing Domino in wetsuit…in a nice glimpse in the department of “What could have been”.
And I still imaging Fiona Volpe (Luciana Paluzzi) in a black Spectre rubber wetsuit in the final scuba battle of the movie 😉
That would have been a proper ending for her.
Also in quite some footage, you see Paula (Martine Beswick) in action scenes against Spectre divers who seemingly wanna kidnap or kill her.
Sadly, they didn’t give her these kinds of scenes in the movie.
Here is some additional promo footage of these Bond girls:

The scuba scenes were oddly edited together with some scenes at the airport, so I edited that stuff out of the video as it was most annoying during the scuba scene.
(*EDIT* After over this year it was now taken down on Youtube…. had to post it elsewhere)

This was the only female scuba scene in the movie.
Ok, as much as I love to see some frogwomen in peril, there is SO much going wrong in this scene!
Ok, it can happen that you dive against some rocks as she does but the way she does it, it shouldn’t damage the valve(?) like that from the angle she hits the rocks.
Also, there are bubbles coming from nearly every direction . How is that supposed to happen? Ok, the valve is (seemingly) broken but it looks like she is leaking air in quite a lot of different places! Most bizarre!
Ok, let’s say this happens to you as a diver. You could continue to breathe as long as the tank isn’t empty and ascend slowly. If you are then out of air you could make an emergency ascend. Or better, just wait for your buddy to reach you in the first place. That situation shouldn’t be dangerous at all with the buddy close by. But what does she do? She doesn’t use any of her 2 regulators, she doesn’t ascend, she doesn’t swim towards her buddy. She seemingly spits out her regulator and then calmly is waiting to drown!?! Surely she is surprised of how quickly she loses her air reserves, but her reaction doesn’t make any sense at all.
This is SO odd, who thinks of such a scene? Pretty sure no one involved with the script had any knowledge of scuba diving. Or the writer was just going to create a dangerous situation for he could be able to rescue her, which is later in the movie an important plot point…..no matter how crazy it is.
However, as much there is to criticize, I do like the scene. Certainly a nice, odd addition to the collection.
And in general, it’s never wrong to have a scene where oxygen is escaping like that. The audio alone is…… 😉

Odd little detail:
They are using scuba gear from Mares. Whenever the whole lettering is visible it gets blurred, so you can’t really see it very well.
Although you know in any case that “Mares” is lettered there.
Especially in other scenes, it’s most obvious that they tried to hide the fact that this is Mares equipment (very unsuccessful though! 😆 )
Why did they do that?
My only explanation is that Mares was perhaps ashamed of being involved in this movie?
Perhaps they thought it would be bad publicity…..

In another 2 weeks, the next movie is shown and then I can make a longer cut with improved picture quality of this one:
