The Deep House [scuba movie – review]

Earlier this year in May I made two posts about a new scuba movie:

And I even heard about it much earlier in the year.

Now I was finally able to watch the movie!

Making a post about it as I usually do, would be quite impossible.

In the post, I will post some minor to average spoilers but NO big spoilers about the ending.

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

Normally I post basically all the scuba scenes from a movie as they normally have only one or two.

In this case, that won’t work. Ok, I could post the highlight scenes of it….but I decided against that, at least for now.

If you are interested in scuba, scuba action, scuba peril….then this movie is a MUST-see for you!

The movie has an introduction of about 20 minutes, and then the whole rest of the movie is set underwater!

As the movie has a total runtime of about 80 minutes….well….yeah….this movie has 60 minutes of scuba diving in it!

Thereby the movie practically shows their dive in real-time!

That is why I can only recommend watching the WHOLE movie instead of some snippets.

Now to the movie, is it worth the time and money?

Well, I certainly think it is! 😉

The storyline is simple, a couple is filming themselves as they enter haunted houses, cool places, and such things and upload these videos for the followers.

They heard of a lake that isn’t on any map and that there would be a house in that lake in great condition.

So, they decide to dive down to the house where the action begins as they aren’t alone there!

The movie certainly takes its time before the horror really starts and I’m glad the trailer showed so little of it.

The overall idea of why this house is a horror house is solid. The atmosphere is building up really well as the two divers proceed further into the house.

The sound is really good, especially with headphones or a nice Surround Set!

The scuba gear is quite nice. Standard wetsuits with BCD’s on the back where they belong! And they are using solid full-face masks.

Now, some pictures from the movie:

Like in Breaking Surface the main enemy of the divers is time and the dwindling oxygen reserves. But in a hunted house there are also other problems 😉

Here you have to accept the fact that supernatural things are happening. I mean there is a house in pristine condition in a lake that was “made” decades ago.

They really did a good job in building these sets and I’m looking forward to finding hopefully some “making of” videos on a Blu-ray release in the future.

Spoiler title
I had hoped for a little more (scuba) action, especially as there is a twist near the ending that is perfect to have some more scuba action. Yeah, there are some struggle scenes near the very end, but I had hoped for more. But yeah, it’s hard to satisfy me in that direction. The “ghosts” should be more dangerous, which of course is difficult as they are basically underwater corpses who are quite slow (naturally). The most danger comes from their supernatural abilities.

The movie has just the 2 divers and one other guy in it (picture 1). But shooting underwater is complicated and expensive!

From the trailer, it was already clear that there would be “only” this couple, but it would have been great to have perhaps 2 more divers down there with them. That would provide more action scenes with the scuba divers.

Or perhaps no supernatural aspects and some enemy divers that are there to protect the house for some reason. And then some scuba fights in an underwater house! How fantastic would THAT be?!

But ok, that’s my fantasy 😉

All in all, the movie is really good and delivers quite a unique setting with 60 minutes of underwater scenes!

Yeah, there is some wasted potential here and there, but still, it is a very entertaining movie.

*EDIT* As I just learned, there is a short scene AFTER the credits, so check that out 😉

In some weeks I may post my highlight scene of this movie, but as I said, watch the whole movie!

Ok, enough from me.

Have you seen the movie already?

What do you think?

Feel welcome to leave a comment!

  1. I saw the film and enjoyed it, the woman looks well geared up and very sexy in all her gear. There are a few diving discrepancies but on the whole I enjoyed the film, the one thing that was a problem was the diving environment ( dark and slightly murky) was meant to be a major contribution to the atmosphere and scare factor. And to none divers this probably worked, unfortunately to any UK diver it just looked like a weekend at Stony Cove.
But seriously respect to the people who made this movie, it must have been a nightmare to film.
I too can’t wait for the making of this move , I would love to know if the actors were already trained divers before they auditioned.

    • Have you seen the additional scene AFTER the credits? I learned about that yesterday and added that info to the text.
Could be pointing towards a sequel….and/OR….it’s just there to show that evil guy luring more divers down there 😉

Yeah, the lake is dark and somewhat murky. But I think the visibility is pretty good for such a lake and once they are in the house that “problem” is resolved anyhow.
