Time for certainly one of the best underwater peril scenes from Flipper!
Damn, I wish this newer Flipper series would be released on Blu-ray, HD TV/streaming, or at least on DVD at some point, as the picture quality is rather bad.
But as this show is over 20 years old and isn’t well known…this might never happen 🙁
Nevertheless, I really like this scene as there are quite some interesting aspects to it!

And here is the video:
Ok, the whole “rock floats down, slices her high-pressure air hose, but doesn’t hurt her at all” aspect is really, really weird and makes no sense.
But besides that realism aspect….it’s a pretty great scene!
First of all, these two are experienced divers in the show, it’s completely irresponsible that her dive buddy decides to leave her and surfaces without her.
Well, the scene dictates that she has to be alone down there as the mysterious guy couldn’t save the “frogwoman in distress” when the other one would be there to help her.
It’s a little odd that she doesn’t react to the other woman trying to contact her and that she seemingly isn’t much concerned that her air hose was ruptured and doesn’t react to it. But ok, maybe she was in shock by the whole development, so…..I guess that’s somehow understandable.
Lucky for her the mysterious guy shows up, yanks her mask off, and puts the octopus regulator into her mouth. Nice timing dude!
And yeah…. spoiler alert….he is a real human…. and not a product of her imagination.
Later in the episode, they have 2 short dive scenes together without action.
And by the way: “My air hose was ruptured!” …..that’s a real trigger sentence for me! 😆
Wanna know from which episode this scene is?
IMDB is all messed up on season 4 of this show.
But it should be season 4, episode 8, “Waterworld”
What do you think of these scenes?
Leave your comment below!
P.S.: BONUS snippet!
Too late I realized that the scene is continued on the boat after the starting credits, so check this out:
“Sure it wasn’t Sean Connery?” she asks smiling big time….
And as this is a rather small TV movie from 2000 with only 73 ratings on IMDB, I doubt that there will be ever a HD release, so this might be the best quality for this one…ever.
A young woman is on vacation with her parents. She falls in love with a handsome guy who happens to run a scuba school at the beach nearby.
She is curious and wants to dive with him. After a training session in the pool he convinces her to make a nightly dive to a wreck.
He has special plans for her…..murderous…. plans! He has a job to fulfill!

And here is the video:
I envy those of you who just saw this scene for the first time!
There are some aspects, that could have been done better for sure…..but damn, when it comes to scuba peril scenes….this one is hard to top.
[watch the video first!!!]
First the sneaky bastard lures her into a wreck, perfect for his evil plans.
He is the experienced diver and she has nearly no practice at all.
But seemingly he is too sure of himself! Early on he makes a first mistake.
Instead of a suprising, simultaneous attack on mask AND regulator, he “just” uses one hand to attack her as he rips out the regulator. And he could easily grabbed her mask afterwards as she is completely surprised by his attack and needs some seconds to realise that he wants to drown her.
I love the shocked look on her face as she realises what her beloved instrtuctor is actually up to!
But instead he grabs her arms. Ok, if he would have be able to control her arms…that wouldn’t be a problem. Without her regulator she would drown quickly. But she manages to escape his grip!
And again, he makes a mistake….as she is reaching for the shaft of that champagne glass he could have easily ripped her scuba mask off which would have made her pretty helpless immediately.
But he somehow just pointlessly yanks at her….what is he doing???
However as she slams that glass shaft into his leg…. he starts to gain control over the situation again.
The way she manages to retrieve her regulator, greedily sucks for air and is so close to escape the wreck….is greatly done! Now he is in full control as he pulls her back in and starts yanking with force on one of her air hoses (I don’t think that it is actually her (main) regulator as she is breathing from it for some seconds afterwards. And she could have used her second regulator otherwise, pretty sure she had one. Of course only as long as there is still air remaining in her tank.
I don’t know if you actually could rip of such a hose like that…but sure as hell it’s a great view as her air starts gushing out with force! Especially as she reaches behind her to see if she can do anything about it.
As the evil instructor leaves her trapped in the wreck, she manages to stay somewhat calm and manages to focus on how to escape.
She realises that her quickly emptying tank builds an air pocket and gets the oxygen she desperately needs.
Also she finds a method to break through that window and thereby escapes the wreck.
Ok, that fact that she manages to swim up the whole way, even stopping so that he would drive away….might not be SOOOO realistic. And also if she would make to the surface, she might get the bends as the wreck was seemingly in some depth.
But of course, for the movie to go on, the lead actress had to survive this trap…
This scene has so much to offer….
A surprise attack where he rips out her regulator! A struggle! A counterattack from her!
He pulls her back in and ripps off an air hose! A tank spewing bubbles! Her desperate breathing in the air pocket!
Her struggle to break through the glass! Her desperate ascend and panic attack as she reaches the surface!
Well, with this post I wanna start a new category! There are a lot of comics that have scuba scenes in it. Some of them have scenes with underwater fights or other peril scenes. And some of those should have female divers in it (even most of these action scenes are with men 🙁 ).
So, I wanna present scenes that I found AND scenes that you can recommend (more on that below).
Ok, the scene for today is from a comic book from germany. So most of you should have problems to understand the written parts.
But don’t worry, the story is very simple.
Mike Nelson (the hero from Sea Hunt!) has found out about a criminal couple who steal from yachts at night. So he swims after them (without scuba gear….he wasn’t prepared) and wants to stop them!
(click on the image to enlarge it to full size!)
Ok, well, the action scene with the female diver only has one panel….but with the text…it really fuels the imagination 😉
English translation of the text in that panel:
Mike passes the girl. He rips the air hose from her tank and forces her to the surface.
Well, that’s a pretty great line 😉
Now imagine that scene in a movie…..wouldn’t that be great?
Ok, these two criminals doing a very poor job. They are 2 against one. They both have full sets of scuba gear. And Mike has no gear at all, not even a mask.
And yet he easily finishes them off….he’s Mike “the scuba warrior” Nelson! 😉
And I don’t know if you actually could rip a modern air hose off a tank….but that’s a nice experiment for some day. 🙂
I will try to get more scenes with female divers in action, but here’s my question!
Do you know any scenes like that? With female divers in action/peril in comic books?
If yes, please let me know! If the scene is good I will offer a free month (or monthS) for the Frogwoman VIP club in return!
Thanks for the recommendations so far (by mail, comment or otherwise)!
I already got 2 great scenes and one good one that will be posted in the next weeks here!
Keep em coming!
Already gave out a total of 6 months free VIP memberships.
This one is one for my Hall of Fame! I had that one my “to put on the blog”-list for ages, time that it finally appears here. I guess many know it already, but for those who doesn’t know it…. you will see a very intense scuba peril scene.
Two divers (one female, one male) exploring in an underwater cave system. This is a dangerous task and they soon will realise that in a really bad way.
And here is the video (longer version can be found below):
Wow! That scene is really evil. The way she struggles to survive, then panics and wants to have that scuba mask for herself, clawing on it…
…and then tries to get it back…while she weakens with every second she is out of air. Intense!
In most aspects this drowning is very realistic, the way she swallows water after she runs out of air….you won’t see a scene like that often (in a “normal” movie or TV-series).
She has doomed herself after damaging her precious air hose in a tunnel before.
Some aspects of this scene are weird to me:
—> 1) Why are there no bubbles as she damages the air hose in the tunnel? She should realise the damage herself right away. Even it started with “only” a tear in the air hose…you should be able to see that. Or he should be able to realise that much earlier….
—> 2) Ok, buddy breathing with that equipment costs a lot of oxygen. Shouldn’t they try to move in a direction together? Anywhere to safety? Buddy breathing and staying on the same point….is completely useless since no help will come to them in time. They would run out of air and would both die.
—> 3) They dive around in caves without any backup systems? Ok, they had to leave the bailout tanks, because of a very narrow tunnel. But hey, shouldn’t there be a second regulator and other safety precautions? Seems pretty…. MAD ….diving in caves like that….in my opinion.
But ok, how many new scuba scenes like this show up? Well, very few in the last 20 years. And it’s my first scene where a woman with a rebreather drown…UNIQUE!
And the struggling and drowning is done very well!
It’s a pretty odd plane of the evil guy…let’s push her higher…so that her air hoses might rip….
I don’t know if that would even work…but …..THANKS to the screen writer who thought about that way 🙂
I would say he could have used the cutting robo-hands to attack her…ok, maybe his range was to short for that. I think movement is very limited in that thing.
The only two things I would actually change:
The “suits” of Bond and Havelock are pretty unsexy. It looks like they had no real dive suits and took some rain clothes that Q found in the basement somewhere.
Real wetsuits would have been much better (for me).
If you look carefully at the closeup-shots…you might notice that the actress isn’t actually underwater! The problem was that Carole Bouguet couldn’t dive because of some medical issues. I guess she couldn’t make the pressure compensation because of it. So they used some tricks that it would look like she actually is underwater.
And I edited a very short video that focuses on her. In some ….sexy closeups:
